"Rear shock replacement"

My Mark has 92K miles on it (1994) and I'm considering replacing the rear shocks shortly. I know its suggested that the rear shock mounts be replaced at the same time as the shocks. I've been pricing the OE rear shocks and the prices are ridiculous. I see that FPN sells the rear shocks for $85 each (I'm assuming they come with the mounts, correct me if I'm wrong) and the mounts seperately for $21 each. Are the OE shocks worth the $64 difference? Are they that good? Would I have any problems (ride or mechanical) if I just went out and bought a good set of Monroe's or Gabriel's and bought new mounts without the OE shocks. I could save about $80-$90 doing it that way. Has anyone done this before? Part numers? Thanks.

Yes you need to replace the insulator, it gets destroyed over time.

Your 94 has electronic actuators at the top of the shock which change with driving conditions. Gabriel/Monroe/Cobra shocks do not have that.

Many have fitted cobra shocks and loved them, but the price recently doubled and they are now equal to if not more than the stockers.

About 3-4 years ago a fellow named Cecil fitted some monroes and loved them, but I don't know if anyone else has.

For that price, I would try them. You will probably have to mod the insulator in order to get anything other than stock to fit - you just have to drill out the center hole a little. Look at the cobra shock threads from a month or two ago for details.

Remember your Gen 1 shocks are adjustable and controlled by the ride computer. Gen 2 are not adjustable. I don't believe either come with upper mounts. I just bought new upper mounts for my Gen 2 and paid 32 apiece so 21 is a great price. Yes, you can modify mounts etc., but remember you did get 94k and 9 years out of the O.E.

Personnally, if car is mainly your driver, I would go O.E. and call it good for another nine years.

My 2 cents worth.

I didnt know the OE shocks were electrically accuated. Now I understand why they cost so much. I just figured it was another overpriced Lincoln part. So do the shocks come with the mounts?

You need to ask the parts person when you order the shocks if the mounts come with them. I specifically recall other posts that said the top mounts definitely come with new 1st gen shocks. Perhaps they can be purchased either way. I recently purchased new 2nd gen shocks and they didn't come with mounts. 2nd gen shocks are a little cheaper and will fit 1st gens but as the others said, do not have the actuator on top to change valving like 1st gens.
There are no direct bolt-in inexpensive (Monroe, Gabriel etc)rear shock replacements for 1st or 2nd gens. I paid $140 a pair from 5 Star.

I replaced mine last year at 102K miles on the 93.The mounts came with the shocks,OEM,from FPN...about $175 for everything. It took 2 hours, and yes the 93 has the active shocks and did cost more,I guess you could put the Gen 2 shocks on and save money. The replacements were the exactly same as what was on the car.The old mounts were cracked and in bad shape. It rode a lot better with the new shocks.

Thanks for all the suggestions fellas. And thats a great pic Ron. I will buy the OE shocks when I do the replacement. When I first posted, I had no idea that the shocks were electronically accuated. I want to keep the air ride system intact, so as far as I'm concerned the right parts are the only way to go.

FYI, I don't think *all* of the 1st Gen cars had the actuator on top of the shock. I may be wrong, but I thought it was a 93-94 only thing. Anyone with a 95/96 want to go out and see if that actuator is there or not?

No actuators on mine. Hell, even if there were, new Blistein shocks wouldn't cooperate with them anyways, LOL.

The mounts come with the first gen shocks, just bought a pair on wednesday. If you take a look at the pic above and notice the rubber on the very bottom of where the electronic device is, and two small bolts sticking up with nuts attached. That is your mount. most of the mount is on the underside and can't be seen from above. I recommend and air wrench and a lift if you can get them, this is a 10 minute job each side if you can. Here are some simple insrutions on how to do it.

TURN OF AIR RIDE SWITCH!

Squeeze in the two white tabs with your hand and pull up, that will remove the electronic device.

Take a wrench or deep well socket and place over the first bolt (after removal of electronic device), you may need another wrench to keep the "u" shaped bracket from moving while trying to unscrew the top bolt. Once it is removed, The second nut is not going to come off without someone else holding the lower portion of the shock with vice grips or something similar. (I skiped that Part)

Remove the two smaller nuts, north and south of the large bolt.

Raise the vehicle and preferably with an air powered wrench remove the lower bolt. (big sucker)

Shock and mount will fall off vehicle at this point.

Assemble your new shock and mount and replace in reverse order.

The lift makes a world of difference.

It's a real easy job but that lower bolt is a real pain in the lower part of ones anatomy to get of with a socket wrench, unless you have a long cheater. hope this helps somebody.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-03 AT 08:40 PM (EDT)

Had to find these pics
old worn out bushings, suprised me how bad they were:

This is the new shock and new mount as received from FPN

I got the lower bolt loose by holding the fender and using my leg on the wrench, and to tighten I held the fender with my left hand and pulling with my right. Yes it was very tight. Also I didn't need to jack up the car except to install the shocks as I couldn't quite get it in there, but only had to jack it up about three inches, the tire was still on the ground.

Hope this helps

Ron

I bought mine from a local dealership, but I get pretty good pricing, they were 3 dollars more than what they sell them for on FPN, but I get the satisfaction of having them shipped the next day and I don't have to bear the freight costs. I had ordered the mounts to, but to my surprise they were already in the box, so if you take off $20.00 dollars for the mount, the shocks are more like $67.00 each, not to bad in my opinion. I had that annoying rattle in the back to, now it's like I have a new car, in my opinion worth every penny.

Thats great to hear. I plan on doing mine soon to. I dont have a garage, so I asked my mechanic if he'll do it for me. He told me he has an acount with a local Ford dealership, and if I call and use his name, they'll give the part to me for wholesale. I'm going to call em in the next day or two. I dont know if a Ford dealer is going to have Mark shocks, but if he does it should save me a few bucks.

If you do a search of this board, I have posted pics of the procedure I used to modify the rear shock mounts to accomodate 03 Cobra Bilsteins which cost me like $70 for the pair from Max at Five Star Ford.

I did this at 50,000 miles and the results were amazing. Not only did the handling improve but the ride actually is smoother. In fact, I liked the shocks so much that yesterday I went and bought the rest of the 03 Cobra and another set of Bilsteins (already installed) to go with it - it handles beyond my wildest dreams.

Basically, all that is involved is drilling the mount out to accomodate the slightly larger Bilstein and using a larger fastener (10mm nut) to secure the shock. Max also has the correct size fastener for the top and the mounts with a 25% discount for LOD members.

Good luck

Robin
