"power steering flush help"

   Quick question-

I'm going to replace the power steering fluid in my Mark VIII.
Here's my plan-

1. remove the return line to the power steering pump.
2. start the car, turn the wheel.
3. watch old power steering fluid spray out the disconnected hose.
4. pour new Dextron Mercon III into the system.
5. continue pouring new fluid into fluid comes out clean.
6. close the system, then bleed it.

O.k- so standing, looking at the front of the car, which hose is the return line to the power steering pump? The left one, or the right one? The drivers side, or the passengers side?

Thanks.

I'm getting ready to do the same thing sort of. The return line is the one coming back from the cooler in the front of the car. The line coming out of the back of the cooler (standing in front of the car) to the power steering pump reservoir.

The other hose goes to the pump assembly.

Good luck.

This is an old post from about 2 years ago. Hope it helps.

HOW TO DO A SUPER FLUSH!!!!

A helper will make this easier.
The best way I've found, is to set a big funnel(to act as a big reservoir) or something on top of the reservoir. Get ready with as much p/s fluid as you can afford(you may even want to get the cheap stuff to flush only). After you disconnect the return line from somewhere(the lower the better), immediately start filling up the large funnel with fluid, then start the engine. Turn the wheel a few times to really get things clean. Keep doing this till you start running low on fluid.

After your done, let the "cheap stuff" drain out as much as possible. You even want to turn the wheel WITHOUT THE ENGINE RUNNING. This will force out alot of fluid.

When done with all this, connect the return line and fill up the reservoir. Crank up the car for a few seconds and fill it up several times. After a few times doing this, fill it up again and crank the car up and turn the wheel to the left and the right a few times and then shut it off WHILE THE WHEEL IS TURNED TO EITHER THE LEFT OR RIGHT. Wait about 5 minutes in between times doing this and always keep the fluid level where it needs to be AND SHUT OFF THE MOTOR WITH THE WHEEL TURNED THE OTHER WAY. The fluid will become a white milky color. This is normal and is nothing but air bubbles. Keep doing this until the color of the fluid gets as red as possible. Keep the top of the reservoir off while doing this. When you get it as red as possible, put the cap back on the reservoir and go drive it. It will bleed more air out as you drive the car.

   So, what is best?

Dextron Mercon for the power steering,
or a product marketed as "power steering fluid"?

Crap- I didn't know that it took Type F still. I thought the systems used Dextron Mercon. Good thing I hadn't started, guess I'll be returning some fluid this week.
