"Koni front strut install (pics)...."

Just completed the front upgrade to Koni Sports and wanted to post a few pics for anyone considering this.

The finished product consist of Koni Sports and springs/strut housings from a 93 5.0 T'bird.

The springs were cut by 1.5 coils. The ride is as smooth as silk with the Koni's set at

their lowest setting and "Bone Jarring" at their highest.

These are the parts that are included with the fronts...

Here are the business ends of the Koni's....

Here are the old units before the conversion....

This is a pic of the area that needs to be cut with a hacksaw. It's very simple to do...

This is after the cut and after the old internals were removed...

This is a shot of the bottom of the old unit. There has to be a 1/2" hole drilled here to

bolt the Koni in. My old unit had a nipple there that I ground off. This may not be

necessary with all units....

Here's the bottom again after the hole is drilled. I decided to clean up the old units and

hit'em with a little paint...

Here's a top shot...

Here the assembled unit without the spring...

This is the bolt that holds the Koni securely inside the old unit housing...

Here's the completed unit ready to install...

What did you do on the rear?
Haven't touched the rears yet. Although, the rear will probably get Koni's along with the factory air bags.

How hard is it to adjust them?
Adjustment is as simple as turning the adjustment knob on top of the strut. Can be accomplished from inside the engine compartment.

what all is involved and how long does it take?
Thats a difficult question. I've have an assortment of "destruction type" tools and rented a spring compressor from AutoZone. It took me 4 hours. That includes the time it took to clean and paint everything.

Nice looking setup, verrry interesting, as I'm still not sure what I want to do when the inevitable happens and I start having problems with th air suspension.

My only question is how do you get the rear air suspension to function w/o the front air suspension being there?

I like that a lot. Had you seen the idea of integrating the shock to the stock mount piece somewhere before or was that your own making? Either way, it is nice and innovative. Your car looks tight. Did you take any pics of the wheelwell before you put the wheels back on?

It's not my idea, it's Koni's. That's just the way their system is made to be installed. I didn't get a chance to take a pic without the wheel, but I'm going to remove the wheel to paint the calipers soon and will do so then.

Ashman,

Can you describe how you set up the manual controls (located inside the car) for the rear airbags?

Thanks,

Looks like a slick setup.

Question is, can this be done with the Mark struts/bags instead of using 'Bird struts/springs?

What's the Koni part # and how much $?

I would imagine that a place like Arnott could replace the OEM strut with the Koni unit which would be ultracool.

Not sure of the part number, it's the one for the T'bird. The price was 282 shipped from Tire Rack.

Looking forward to the wheelwell pics. I was considering painting my calipers too. Feel free to illustrate a writeup on that too if you feel so inclined.

What destructo tools did you bring to bear on these unsuspecting housings?

I did mine using the article here http://www.tccoa.com/articles/brakes/index.html#
An added note is that you should make sure your pads aren't dusting too heavily, otherwise your nice painted calipers will show it off

ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE! (working on it as we speak) How about the same quality(lifespan) air bladder as a stock Ford air strut with the adjustable Koni cartridge?

How's the set up after the conversion, 2 months later?? My bags are finally giving me problems in that I get "check air ride system" on the highway and with the switch on the off position, the rear will drop over night. So I want to do the conversion. I still can't find the rear adapter plates to convert the rear to coil springs. I call strutmasters, they don't have it. Checked for struts R us & I can't find they're site or number, (like if they went outta business or sumthing). Can one please pointme to the right direction? Thanks!!

My suspension finally gave way today , in that the car is on the FLOOR!1 i'm gathering all of the info to make my decision to either convert to origianl height or lowered cause I plan on putting on 18 or 19's in the future.

In cutting the original t-bird springs, you haven't notice a little bouncing in the front?? I mean I've cut springs before on little rice beater hondas & it would bounce like crazy after 1 month or so.

It was bouncy with the original shocks..The Konis took care of that Now, turn the knob one way (nice and smooth, little bounce). Turn it the opposite way (solid suspension).

Two weeks ago I converted my Mark to coils in the front and I'm very pleased with the results.
To get the handling that I wanted, I used the springs and struts from a T-Bird SC. The ride is at the original and will soon be lowered about 2 inches, the rears will be done in about 2 weeks using the top mounts/locators from a T-Bird.
Thanks to the original info posted by Ashman 5 about a year ago.

Another person to the DARK SIDE!
If your going to cut your fr.springs only cut I coil off the top ( so call dead spring, contact with other coils) it will lower it the amount you want. don't cut anything off the rear springs. the marks have a deeper spring cup(lower rear control arms)if you have access to parts, cut the lower control arm spring mounts out of early t-bird 89-90 with the steel lowers (I know there all steel) a few or the early birds have spot welded mounts instead of being one unit. these drop right in our alu. units, and can be attached easly, be sure to use the rubber isolater. you are allready going to use the top mount.( drag racing) at the time of the install you can add an air lift bag inside the right spring
if you have a 93-95 you can wire the auto ride control for the rear shocks to the fr. the covers fit. you could also wire in a manual sw.
Aka (t-bird) to keep it looking stock
if you need stronger springs in rear, use a set out of a (sorry for this S-10) close to same inner dia. bigger coil wire dia. higher rate
Later if you decide you could use the tokidos (elec adj, bolt on & no cuttin of shock housing, or koni yellow inserts (manual adj)a little more work (cutting shock housing) for the t-bird
they no longer make the koni reds (one pc.)units on the koni if you decide to go with the yellows, they make double adj (compression and extension)units for the late Cobras. Just bought a set
I have had the sc bird unit on my car now for for three years.(no problems) getting ready to change out to koni yellows allready have made up.
