Can anyone help me? I have a 94 Mark8 with 147000 miles and the C.E.L. comes on after the car is driven for 20 - 30 minutes. Theres times it will go off and stay off for hours and then times it will go on and off. Is there anyway to check for codes without a scanner? (Like on GM cars)

Go to Auto Zone or Checker (whatever auto store you have) and they will pull the codes for free. Go from there and repair as needed. Use the search function first to get you what you need here for fixing.

You can pull codes without a scanner on an EEC-IV system like this:
From your description, it sounds like O2 sensor(s).

Are you experiencing any problems? Smell thru the vents at WOT? Decreased gas mileage, performance? If yes to any of these, O2's are the culprit. This is a typical maintnence item around 100k.

I had the exact same problem at about 98k. I never had the codes read. I just changed the O2 sensors. Fixed the problem. Side note...my car ran perfectly fine and had no symtpoms of bad O2's.

It's a complete pain in the rear section. If you have patience, lots of patience and willing to buy a tool or two go for it. Worse that can happen is you end up taking it to a shop.
