"Full on power slide"

I gotta post this. I was on harwin the other day turning right onto hilcroft which is the way I go to work everyday. Coming up on the light the light was green and I realized I was way behind on braking but not so much as I couldnt stop comfortable and take a right. It wouldnt have been a panic braking incident otherwords. I decided to heck with it I will just go around and fishtale, but I was going faster than I though as you will soon find out. I go into the intersection at about 30 (im guessing) and crank the wheel. The mark did a two lane power slide. It was great. Handled perfect. I only kept one hand on the wheel and not untill afterwards did I realize that I went through the turn with all 4 wheels sliding. The cars that were waiting to go straight had a perfect view of it also. They would would have seen a black mark doing a racing style slide around that turn. If they blinked they would have missed it.

Sooo anyway as soon as the wheels got traction again I slammed on the gas because If your fast enouph you can catch the next light green. I come up on a 2002 or 2003 jaguire.

This car. We take the turn under the freeway getting onto the feeder (at this time he had been watching me in his rearview) and I got behind him in the first lane which was appropriate for in-the-city-driving. (im not much of a crazy driver despite my age) I'm behind him and immediately I look over to see if anyone is in the other lane, theres no one, I jump over one lane and get on the gas to pass him. I didnt shift down so there was no downshift when I hit the gas and when I got beside him it was obvious he didnt want me to pass him. I was going around 40 mph and I smashed the gas and so did he. Hehe.. He was actually a little bit ahead of me when we hit it but crawled up on him and passed him at around 100mph. Got on the freeway at 110 and slowed down. I dont think he will underestimate the mark VIII again. BTW that jag is a 70,000 doller car and it runs 15.2 in the quarter mile.

Ohh well, I hope he didnt buy it for the speed.

What... do what?

That's a pretty sick car. Too bad it's so expensive. Maybe it'll depreciate as quick as the Marks. That's cool that you showed him what was up though.

I had the pleasure to have a mid-life crisis looking dude in a supercharged model try to show off to his teen-aged gal last wednesday night, and he pulled away for about enough time for me to hit my "LAUGHING GAS" (NOS). And I wish I could have seen his face as I just blasted him.I am curious to see what those models do in the 1/4. My '94 with 3:73's, pulley's, home-made ice cooled cold-air kit and 100 shot puts me at 13.20 at best in sunny S.Florida.

You would not have beat a XJR without the NOS. The 'R' model XJ and XK have stock 1/4 mile times in the mid 13's!

One of my choices for my next car is a XJR (the 4-door), too bad I can't afford a used one........yet

I would love to bring a XJR to the drag strip. I have NEVER seen one, or any other jaguar for that matter, in my many trips to the drag strip.

BTW - 13.2 is a great time with those mods! You don't even have an exhaust?!

Ken

I dont think I can reiterate to yall how perfect this power slide was. Im talking 30 mph-- wheel spinnin-- Godlike Driving Skills , sideways sliding turn here. It was an act of beuty. I've driven rx-7's, cobra mustangs, m-3's, corvette's, and camaro's around turns like this, ohh and a 3000gt, and NONE of them were this gracefull nor easy to handle. Has anyone else taken their mark around a 90 degree turn at 30-40mph. If not dont be afraid to do so. It'll be a long time before I put sway bars on my mark but I bet you guys who do have them enjoy them greatly.

What... do what?

I have in the rain though. I was in the middle of the drift then I hit dry pavement and I just lost it there. Wheel was turned to correct the oppisate way because I had a little oversteer and it just went straight for the curb. Next day Im in Sears having the car alined

This pavement was completely dry. It was around 80 degrees outside and sunny. I still cant believe how well the mark handled in the slide. Yea, it didnt turn through the corner like a rally car would have and I stayed on the gas the whole time but it was perfect. It was great fun.

On a side note I was going to school the other day and it had just started raining. For about 10 minutes these fat drops were falling out of the sky randomly. Not drizzly but big fat drops. The streets were literally greese. I couldnt go around a corner without the backend coming out. No matter how I did it the backend would swing out. I need better tires. But that's not what this post is about. I get on the street that turns onto my school and I'm going 30mph, have a cop 100yrds behind me, and being very carefull about my driving. I was starting to stop way way way waaaay before the stop sign so I made it through that. Whew, but after the stop sign and continuing down the road I see I have to put on the brakes again because a truck with a trailer hooked to it is BACKING UP in my lane (prob because he slid through his turn). I am about 50 yards away when I start hitting the brakes and at around 30 yards my car starts to slide. I'm still going over 20 mph so I have plenty of time for insurance/damage/injury, and the fact my baby is going to get a very big boo boo to run through my mind. THEN the abs kick in. YEEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. Saved my butt. If I didnt have abs I would have been halfway up that trailers backside. My driving skills are still superior to all of yours.

What... do what?

Not many buy an XJR for the speed only...

They have 385 Hp and a lot more TQ than a NA Mark does,

Gearing is the dept that the Jag lacks big time,

If it were 3.73'd or 4.10'd that beast would run 12's

With the lazy smooth auto and low stall speed and something like a 3.08 rear and a curb weight close to 4k lbs... its not a quarter mile car.

Imagine when they are affordable like the Mark!!

Gears,Re-flash,MAF,PULLEY, and a ragtop with 480HP!!!

Yea, if you think about it, they are definately comparable cars. Both are RWD V8 powered luxury sport coupes. The XK8 is almost twice the price, and the difference? I dunno, I never bought one. I guess you get a Cat on your emblem, and a hefty insurance bill, not to mention that "Reed and Mitsy" will gladly join you for tea at the Britton Estate every other Tuesday. Nice power slide action though. Killer IRS set up allows for that. The best is when your motor is up against the limiter, and the back tires are boiling while you are at "full drift".

Great powerslide story... I have a few of my own, mostyl due to tires.

1. In NJ during the rain im stopped at a light. Light turns green and the rear end breaks lose without any gas applied! Also the Mark would fish tail all the way up to 50 when ever I stomped on it not only from a start but from 25, 35, and even 45.

2. In FL - Dry pavement - Sunday - Do a Crazy U-turn holding the gas followed by taking a right at the next light at 40(natural fishtail), then from a stop at the next light, jam on the gas and make a left once im done the turn I took my foot up off the gas and jam back down, chirping at 35!

3. Jag powerslide - Sunday - long curve taken at 70 in a 35! Yes a Controlled drift, the Pirellis screamed!

On a side note, Jaguars are my favorite car manufacturer (dont worry followed by Lincoln). My father has an Xj8 and has had two XJS's prior. THEY ARE STRICTLY ART! No speed runners, the new ones are better but Jag has to start putting some better gears in for American Roads. Comparably they are probably never going to take BMW's, Mercedes Benz, or Audis in a race but they will look a hell of a lot better at the finish line. Next time you see a Jag xj8 or xjs(not the new s-type or even xk8) take note of the lines and particularly the hood. You dont find those lines anywhere anymore, not even Bentleys or Rolls! Also, not for nothing, but the interior is way out there, Next best thing to a Rolls for an 8th of the price.

96 Mark - Opal Opalescent/Ivory - BASE - STOCK (Mine)
98 Jag XJ8 - Topaz/Oatmeal - LOADED (MAMA'S)
01 Navi - Ebony/Tan - LOADED 4x4 (POP's)
96 Jag XJS Convertible - Triple Black (DREAM)

Yea, but whats with the steering wheel being off-kilter to the right? Steering box location? Oh, and Castrol, mineral oil filled shocks? WTF is up with that? Oh, and the reverse "U" gated automatic shifters? And my final question about the jag. What is up with those darn electrical systems?
Ok, Old Brittish joke for ya... Why do the Brittish like warm beer?

Because their refridgerators are made by LUCAS.

O O O come on now. I told ya the jag was art and no race car isnt that enough!? And if your gonna cut it up, you might as well bring up those 5.2 and 6.0 v12s that take an xjs to 60 in an amazing 9.2 seconds! Or how the XJR gets spanked by all its competition in 0-60, 1/4, and handling, but ofcourse not in the styling department.

I'll give you that. The Jag is defiantely a beautiful car. I sold a 1973 E-type V12 roadster for a friend of mine back in 1989. $75k cash. It was primrose yellow, and it was absolutely stunning. BUT.... yea.. 12 cylinders, wide open on hwy 280 going 110.. scariest ride of my life. No thanks. Buy one, wax it, park it, and look at it. Dont even think of driving it. Youll get pissed.
