"Windshield Washer Pump Troubleshooting"

   All,
The washers on my car no longer squirt... so I pulled off the covers and pulled loose the hose and still no fluid flow... I am starting to think it is the pump, but I can hear it running.

So what should I do from here? It sounds to me like the washer pump is bad. After looking at it, how do you get the washer bottle out (it appears the pump is integral to the bottle).

My local lincoln dealer says 'book' is 2 hours.

Anyone have any other advice?

Thanks!

Eric

Common problem for alot of cars(mine included). The concentrated soaps most people put in the reservoir eventually dry up in the pump/lines/nozzles, and clog them. I haven't tackled my Mark's pump yet, but most of them come out the bottom of the reservoir. You need to remove all the crap that covers the resevoir, and most cars it is quite simple to do. If the dealer sais 2 hours, then its cake. Remember, they charge for everything, including opening the hood, and refilling the resevoir when the pump has been swapped out. I am willing to bet it's about a 2 hour job from the moment you grab your keys, til the moment you wash your hands. Good luck. P.S., its a good idea in the future to run your squirters once a week to prevent clogs. Also, dilute the hell out of the fluid. I use water only in mine. All the soap does is mess up your paint, and dry on the roof anyway. Unfortunately, the previous owner of my 94 used washer fluid too.

You are correct sir! except that the 2 hours also included running to Napa for a pump which I didn't need. There is a rubber filter on the inlet to the pump to keep debris out of the line. My filter was clogged with what can only be called snot - thick, gooey, green snot. I cleaned it out of the rubber filter, rinsed out the reservoir, then ran 100 PSI air thru the lines to blow anything out that might be clogging it up. Works now!
Anyway, in case anyone needs to know how to do it, here are the simple directions (this is for a 94, YMMV):
1. If you don't hear the pump run, go get a replacement. If you don't need it you can return it, and there is no reason not to be prepared. If you can go look at one it will make conceptualizing the work easier.
2. Get a beer, getting that pump was a lot of work, and you need to refresh yourself.
3. Remove the large beauty cover between the radiator and the grill. This will entail removing the extended hood release first.
4. Using your left hand, reach down on the left side of the hood latch (as you are looking at it), snake your arm over to the reservoir and pump (this sounds harder than it is). Disconnect the wire plug on the top of the pump.
5. Pull the pump out. It is a press fit into a rubber grommet/filter and will come out fairly easily. Start by pulling the top a bit then rock it to pull it completly out of the reservoir.
6. The outlet of the pump has a check valve, disconnect it from the lines leading to the squirters. Remove the pump and check valve from the car.
7. Stick a garden hose in the top of the reservoir, turn it on to flush the reservoir, and get another beer.
8. Now that your beer is almost gone and you have flooded the driveway, turn off the garden hose and let the reservoir drain.
9. Use a pressurized air source to blow out the lines leading to the squirters, and blow thru the check valve to ensure it is clear and operational. If the squirters don't squirt, or at least blow air, you have a different problem. The line for the squirters runs inside the driver's wheelwell and up to the the beauty covers under the wiper arms.
10. Put the check valve back onto the pressure hose.
11. Put the rubber grommet/filter back into place. Greasing with a small amout of silicone grease will make it easier.
12. Install the pump. Silicone grease will make this slide in easier.
13. Connect the output hose. Refill the reservoir and test.
14. If it works, get another beer. If not put the electrical plug on and try again.
15. Put the beauty covers back on.
16. Get another beer. You just saved $150, and that is worth celebrating!

Hope that helps the next person who has to do this!

That....was a masterpiece. Thanks for the info. I really enjoy that kind of post. I also really enjoy the " you sir, are correct" part. Glad to be of assistance. Now I know what to do to fix mine.... get beer. p.s. water only in the resevoir, right? Soap is for washing, water is for rinsing. Wiper blades dont wash the windshield.
