"CIGARETTE LIGHTER/ CONSOLE REMOVAL"

MY CIGARETTE LIGHTER DOESNT WORK AND I RECALL SOME POSTS ABOUT HOW ONE OF THE CONNECTORS COMES LOOSE. MY QUESTION IS, HOW DO YOU REMOVE THE CONSLOE ON A 1997 MARK? DO YOU HAVE TO? I JUST WANT A PLACE TO USE MY RADAR. THANKS.

First of all, stop shouting (turn off caps lock).

The console is a little tricky to remove, but not too bad. I'm not sure on the exact procedure off the top of my head, but you will need to remove the trim around the radio, and remove two bolts that are in the console storage box.

If all you want to do is hook up your radar detector, another option, which might be easier, and will definitely look better, is to get some speaker wire of a slightly thicker gauge than the one on the radar detector, cut the detectors cord (make sure you know which wire is positive!!!) attach the connector for the detector to the speaker wire. Attach the radar detector high up on the windshield (mine is hanging so i can just see it below the rearview mirror), and run the wire up into the headliner and along the edge of the windshild, just tucking it in as you go. You may have to remove the plastic on teh a-pillar or the weatherstripping on the door to get route it down the a-pillar. Then find an acceptable fuse in the fuse panel that's right there on the drivers side, that is only on when the ignition is on. Pull the fuse and use a test light or multimeter to determine which side is still hot (with the ignition on and the fuse pulled). Stick the positive wire in the opposite side (the not hot side, that way it is fused), and connect the negative wire to ground. There is a little bolt under that access panel that you can loosen and wrap the wire around for a ground. That's how my fuzzbuster is hooked up, it works great and looks clean.

   Its easy. Here you go
Removing Center Console 97/98 Mark VIII
1.Remove insert for RR defog and heated seat switches (if applicable) by using a small screw driver gently prying outward. Take great care not to damage woodgrain trim.
2.Disconnect wiring plug connectors from switch(s)
3.Remove 2 screws revealed from the step one process that secure wood grain trim ring
4.Remove woodgrain trim ring by gently lifting up on the horizontal section, then out on the vertical section. Disconnect ground wire from trim ring.
5.Remove visible screws on metal bracketry in front of shifter that retain console
6.Remove 2 screws located at bottom of console storage compartment (hiding under black base mat).
7.Disengage front-most console ears from dash by pushing in at top, pulling out on bottom.
8.Disconnect wiring plug for lighter
9.Slide console straight back to free air duct connection
10.Disconnet wiring and antenna for cell phone if equipped

Time about 15 minutes.
