"Steering wheel shakes whenever i brake"

Hey guys,
So I am having this problem with my mark, whenever I brake at all, the steering wheel shakes and they brakes make a screeching sound as well, I talked to my stepdad about it and he says that it's probably a warped rotor. I believe I've read around the forum that these brakes are susceptible to getting the rotors warped from hard braking. Anyways, I'd appreciate it whatever you guys can put in towards the diagnosis.

Regards,
Elvin

I'll take a shot at this, since you got no love so far (and I think I know why THAT is...). The rotors will warp if the lugs aren't torqued down properly, and the symptoms you describe could indicate this. You haven't gotten many responses, I think, because the simplest way to get an answer to your question is to put your car on jackstands, pull the tires off, and inspect your brakes. Warped rotors generally won't screech, but toasted parts will. Additionally, the shaking you feel while braking could be worn suspension components, which will also require that you remove the tires and inspect them. Good luck...

Cal threw some love at him under the driveline forum for the brake issue, however I concur with hockeyman 100%. Typical thought process when talking about "warped rotors" is heat warpage, but that is not neccesarily true----

As molten metal is poured into a rotor casting, it is important to maintain consistent temperature in the liquid metal. Variations in temp can create air pockets (like boiling water). Also the quality of the mixed molten metal is important. Both can cause different densinty areas in the rotor surface. As the rotor wears down, it is removing more surface metal from less dense areas, creating a "warped" uneven rotor. Of course this also leads to the heat warpage somewhat, as denser metal will not cool as fast as more pourous metals, therefore "helping" the rotor to warp. Sometimes you can visualy see this in a warped rotor, where one thirds is shiny with no pits, and the other two thirds is very pitted.

You pay for what you get here, as cheap rotors are cheaply manufactured. It's not a safety issue, just a quality issue with the most expensive rotor lasting the longest and having the best brake feel.
