Just noticed that this stuff is now available at Wal Mart. About 3.29 per quart. Believe it's havoline, but will have to double check. Anyone know how many quarts if I do a complete change and drain torque converter?
I just changed the tranny fluid in my 93 mkviii and it used about ten quarts for the total job including the torque converter. I used fluid labeled Mercon not Mercon V, it only cost 1.19 per quart but I hope I won't damage anything because I went with the cheaper fluid.
Mercon V is synthetic as compared to regular Mercon, that explains the price difference. The TSB recommends that you use the Mercon V. When you do your next trans. service, I would recommend draining the torque converter again and use Mercon V. I bought Motorcraft Mercon V at the dealership for $3.11.
Mercon V is a semi-synthetic fluid. I have been using Mobil 1 ATF (fully synthetic) and now have 45,000 miles registered with no trans. problems at all, (smooth shifts, never had shudder). I'm getting ready for another trans. oil change and am leaning towards the Mobil 1 again at about $4.00 per quart. Any thoughts?......Is anyone out there also using Mobil 1 ATF?

Interesting discussion on the capacities of the Transmission system. I recently had the front pump seals and rear crank seals replaced because of a leak (under warranty) at the dealer and the maintenance record showed 13 qts of Mercon V. Of course this is what the dealer is billing FLM for and is most likely the job standard quantity for this repair. In response to the Mobil 1 ATF, as long as it "meets or exceeds" the FLM spec. I wouldn't see a problem. In my case, Mark is still young, and sees the dealer for oil changes and tire rotation. so I haven't had a reason to deviate from standard practices. I believe I've found a good dealer service dept., so as long as the warranty holds out...
