"replacing thermostat"

I have a 160 degree tstat that I plan on installing in my '97 Mark, as recommended by Max RPM. For those that have done this, did you have to drain the radiator first? The tstat is in an odd place relative to what I'm used to. It is in a three way junction half way between the engine and radiator, as opposed to at the exit of the engine block. In the past I wouldn't bother draining any coolant and just clean up what little dumped out during the job, but with this type of configuration I'm afraid I'm going to have a real mess this time.

This is not a problem, you just have to put the car in the air, drain the radiator from the petcock located on the lower portion of the radiator on the pass. side. Then get under the car and use a 10mm deep socket on a long extension to undo the housing bolts. Then replace the t-stat & re assemble.(there is no gasket for the housing)Then this is the tricky part,to refill the radiator on this vehicle you have to first tighten the petcock up,fill as much antifreeze/water as you can in the fill tank, start the car then fill the tank to the cold fill line & install cap,let the car idle for 2 minutes, then with a 1/4 drive ratchet open the cap located in between the heads on the horseshoe shaped pipe & let the system get hot & "burp" until full. And i suggest you "burp" the cap several more times until it is comepletely full. This may mean you have to do it 4 or 5 times over a few day period. Then do your electric fan on high speed to a key hot & your set.(we are working on a constant powered fan wiring kit right now.ill keep you posted)Remember heat kills & the marks love to make a s#itload of power when cold.I went from 14.98's to a 14.60 just by letting the car cool down to where the guage was on the letter "l" in normal. This is how i discovered using the 160 was a major improvement. And d3espite what anyone may say about having problems in the winter with heat THERE IS NO PROBLEMS.Ive had the 160 in for almost two years and jersey winters are pretty rough and its a turkish bath in that car.any more info please call 1 856 456 3605 9 to 7 pm est.

I don't want to disagree here...but

Mine had an O-ring gasket that was a Bi*ch to get aligned when I put it back together.

I case you can not remember how the refill sequence goes, it is on a sticker inside the engine area. It also explains how to refill the system.

You are correct Greg there is an "O" ring neck gasket. What i was refering to was there is no "standard" style paper gasket to sandwich between the two portions of the housings.

Geno,do you have to have the chip to run the 160 tstat? I thought the onboard computer would have a problem with the colder temp, if not I'll call you tommorow to order one.

A chip is not needed to accomodate the 160 t-stat.The only thing that has to be done is the fan(high speed) has to be hooked into a relayed key assisted hot.call me for more info.
