"Slushbox to stickshift?"

I've been curious, since i got my mark in sept. if a tranny swap would be at all possible. my car is on it's 3rd tranny in 2 years and i also like being able to choose my own gears without paying $2g everytime i'm bored enough to try. I think the 5-spd from a mustang gt would be the closest match. Gino? guys? what ar your thoughts?

Use the search feture for this one.

There has been much discussion on this subject over the years. We did one and never will again!

You can do so much better with the right trans and converter/gear combo. Plus you break stuff with the stick, look at the Cobra guys.

Geno.

that may be, but i'd much rather toast a stickshift's clutch than the one on my slushbox again. the last tranny job almost cost me 3 grand. luckily the guy i bought it from still had a valid extended warranty when HE smoked his. He brought it in as his, and the $3000 job cost me a cool $100 deductible fee. :-D (take THAT, hid-guy) jk

I would consider the number of rebuilds a problem...perhaps a new transmission built to a higher standard, with all the updates and Jerry's suggested valve body mods would survive far longer than the rebuilds you're paying for (or not paying for).

OK, this might be slightly related...but my 18-year-old Auto Tech shop younger brother has a '93 Nissan 240 SX. I don't know if you're at all familiar with them, but a long story short (actually it isn't even that long), it's obviously a 2.4 liter...a longitudinal inline 4 driving the rear wheels. It runs just below 150 hp stock. (doesn't even have A/C) what i'm getting at, is he told me the stock drivetrain is equipped to handle up to 400hp. Any idea if the Mark VIII (or the Mustang GT's) tranny can easily take comparable power? I'm just running a K&N filter in a drilled airbox without a silencer funnel as far as hp boost goes.

What I meant by breaking stuff was suspension related. These cars are super heavy compared to a Stang and have an IRS rear.

Cal is right the correctly built auto will hold up to anything you can put to it.

Call me for the trans.

Heres a movie of my car hitting second like Mike Tyson! Just to show you what you can do with these boxes.

Can it be done! why not! 1/2 second inprovement in ET.
does it take work sure,
You will need a T-45, or as they become available t-56 (six speed)
Flywheel pressure plate combo, mustang gt. (six bolt crank)
you might get away with a supercoupe flywheel same bolt pattern (six bolt) larger pressure plate-clutch 11 1/2" and I believe the also had a 12" unit.
you will have to cut you driveline. T-45 longer
other problem sifter location ( problem on T-birds) no posting or pictures on swap into lincoln Mark Viii, So it is an ????
the biggest problem is cluch linkage....mustangs use a Cable.
the SC- use a hyd....
the biggest advantage would be the gear ratio. with a 3.35 to 1 first and you would not have to worry about stall speed. Not counting 2nd. or 3rd. secondary would be less parasitic loss,
and some gain in weight loss.
As far as our cars being heavy..... not too much more than a Cobra convert...... Now if you supercharged or have Nos, you might want the auto.
as you have a lot more torque to work with than NA car...

ecm. there are a couple of guys on the board that can help, or you could wire in an cobra unit ( harness ect.- lots of work)

I am replacing the motor and tranny in my car but if this auto goes I WILL put a 5-speed in mine.I have been doing research on this for almost a year now and I really think it could be done easily.I measured our tranny and I measured a 96 Cobra 5-speed,believe it or not, they are the same length. That is from the bell to the tail on both.I was fortunate to have both sitting side by side. Also on the TCCOA they have a very good article on the 5-speed swap in a newer T-Bird.They had to make an extension on the shifter and it looked very good and functional. They used a hydraulic set up but I would prefer the cable set up,only because it is alot cheaper and you dont have to worry about breaking lines.I was under mine while everything was out and you can see where the cable goes uo into the body, that is about where the shifter extension that you have to fabricate goes.As for the electronics go,well I am not sure on that yet.I have done auto to 5-spped swaps on 5.0s and never changed the the computer, but this car is so much more complex then the Mustang, not sure on that yet.If anyone here has any ideas on the electronics Please let me know because I think it would be so cool banging the gears in a Mark.
Thanks,
Chris
