"Transmission Upgrade - 5 speed or 6 speed or manual"
Sun Jan-01-06 10:49 PM by callouie

Are there better options other than the 4r70w? I went through two transmissions. They only seem to last about 70K. I bought a new Ford 4r70w last time. I need a new one again. I know Ford has a five speed auto and a six speed auto. I would like a manual trans but I see many posts saying it is not worth the effort. I have the 5 speed auto in my new Ford Superduty truck with the 5.4. The Torqshift trans is made for the higher torque engines. A five or six speed would be a nice replacement. And actually, the new 5.4 with the 5 speed feels like it would be a nice drivetrain to have in a Mark VIII.

I don't know if you're having bad luck with the 4R70W or you're abusing it somehow. Some people here have gotten over 200K miles with no other maintenance than ATF (Mercon V) and filter change every 20K miles; try installing a transmission cooler along with your next automatic transmission.

The 2000 5.4 truck came with either a 4R70W or a 4R100 trans. The 4R100 could be a bolt on, but most likely electronics, driveshaft, and torque converter issues. Still a 4 speed, but additional torque (1000 ft-Lbs) capability. Also probably additional losses due to more friction plates. Anybody looked into swapping in a 4R100??

#48. "Manual Transmission Swap"
In response to Reply # 0

Does anyone have any more info on a manual transmission swap? I am still looking to do a conversion. The clutch seems to be the biggest part. Possibly someone else has tried this by now or the two members that have manuals have more information to provide.

A T-56 would be what I want. The Tremec TKO 500 or 600 seem as though they may be a better candidate since they are made for after market applications.

Any help would be great so I can bring a Mark VIII back alive!

I have ordered a transmission re-worked 4R70W rated for 900 HP. It is a manual valve body 3 speed with an electronic overdrive. I also ordered the trans brake for my application. Check out there website at http://www.fbperformance.com for more info. You could also look at Lentech transmissions as they make high performance AOD and AODE trannys for our cars. I will be putting in a forged Marauder motor in my car in the future for street and strip use.
