"Tune Up"

I have just joined this forum, and i just bought my first mark not too long ago. It has about 111000 miles and its time for a tune up. Where should i start, also any initial performance upgrades recommended?

1) Spark plug wires are generally good to 100,000 miles. You might want to replace. They can go bad without warning.

2) A lot us around here use Autolite 764 copper spark plugs gapped at .54.

3) Air cleaner.

4) fuel filter.

Along with an oil and oil filter change you might want to replace your antifreeze.

That's about it for basic engine maintenance.

5) For the transmission, you want to change the fluid to Mercon 5. It is the best fluid for this trans. You also want to change the 1-2 accumulator to the later style. The early style 1-2 accumulator wears out its bore in the trans case.
-----------------------

The spark plug threads in the heads are rather delicate. Do not swap plugs in a hot engine. Suggest you get an inch-pound torque wrench and pay attention to all torque values listed in the factory service manual.

Practicing good maintenance will give you more bank for the buck than any kind of performance upgrades, unless you plan to go hot rodding.

You might want to consider doing what is called the JMOD to your transmission. Someday.

Do those five basic items and you will be good to go.

Learn to use the search function at the top of the board. Use search terms such as "JMOD", "crossover tube", and "headlights". It will keep you busy for awhile.

Good advice above...I'd advise to change the following:

Brake fluid
Coolant
Power steering fluid
Serpentine belt
Desiccant(or dry out in oven) in air pump assy
PCV valve
Maybe rear gear oil

You'd be surprised how much water the brake fluid absorbs after many years...it'll turn rather green looking.

Thank you guys so very much, ive heard about the JMOD but i think its a little risky and i have no idea how to do it, but i am going to order a tuner here soon, and ive already re-done the air intake. I do plan on hot rodding, and hopefully i wont catch much flak about it form you guys. I always had questions on the cobra intakes, any information would be helpful.
thank you, alex

Nobody had any idea how to do the J-mod til proper and EXTENSIVE research was done...at least I didn't. You sound mechanically competent, do a large amount of Googling til you feel confident. I just finished a J-mod myself today..took two days not counting parts chasing...but I never get in a hurry.

I forgot one item. You need to install a trans cooler. Get the plate type.

Just Google transmission coolers and start shopping at Amazon etc. Prices vary. Shop around.

Here is for B & M coolers: Bigger is better.

If by cables you mean plug wires, I have no idea. Ford Cobra or MSD, perhaps.

I posted just a bit ago, but it looks like it didn’t take:
As I said, I’m not an expert on this car, but I’m learning & I’m putting my 2 cents in for what it’s worth – besides all that you’ve done & what the rest are telling you to do, you might want to consider this:

1. use K & N air filter
2. put on some High Performance MSD Coil Packs if you have Gen. 1
3. replace the Alternator (yes, they can die a slow death)

I did this to my 95 base & got these results:
1. better performance
2. got my 30mpg back (doing 80mph)
3. brought my temperature down to 25% of norm like it was before & it’s holding steady.

I bought the 70264 B&M unit...seems to be working fine but IIRC, I had to buy some additional hose to make things reach.
