Came across this, thought others may find it useful, I checked to see if it had been posted but could not find anything, sorry if it's a repost.

I just checked my street car tires and they check out fine (2004) I went to check my winter tires and the area where the number is supposed to be is blank...lol I know they are from Russia so maybe they don't use the same code method.

There is a measure of truth to it, There's also some sensationalism, as the media has an affinity for. Like everything else on your vehicle, your tires need to be maintained and monitored.
