40 years ago when I was stationed in CA, the rumor was that you couldnt have ANYTHING lower than the bottoms of the rims (without tires). But again, that was a rumor. I dont know of any other state with a law that has a minimum ground clearance.

I knew a guy that got pulled over for his tail lights, when he changed lanes his crossmember took out some reflectors. He had to pay for the reflectors but he didn't get a ticket for being too low. This was back in the day before air suspension.

Well, it`s probably true. If anything is lower than the rim and you get a flat it could turn out to be a wild ride.

I'm not sure, to be honest with you. Vettes and the Ford GT have a ground clearance of 5", and I think the Solstice is a mm or so less than that. Seems to me that I remember some GM product in the past coming off the line at 4.5", but I can't remember what it was - Firebird maybe? For average driving conditions, anything much less than that is crazy, IMHO.

Louisiana has a law about lowered vehicles and if any other state has one, I'm sure it would be close to the same as the below mentioned.

The vehicle must have operational shock absorbers and springs and has at least 3” of suspension
travel.

The vehicle has at least 4” of ground clearance measured from the frame with the vehicle on a
level surface.

Ive driven alot of bagged trucks, and my 1994 Thunderbird was on air suspension .. never got pulled over for being "too low", but I do have a stack of tickets and Fix-it tickets for other offenses.

Im out here in California, and heres a couple of experiences Ive had with law enforcement ..

Years ago I was stopped for peeling out at a stop sign. The officer was pretty angry, but a bunch of high school kids were telling him not to give me a ticket LOL .. he gave me a warning about "exhibition of speed", and was looking for something else to just give me a ticket for. So he pulled out his tape measure and checked the front end. Apparently, the top of the front bumper must be at least 12" from the ground - mine was exactly this height ( lowered 3" from stock ), although I dont know how they determined where the top of the front bumper is, maybe at the bottom of the headlights is my best guess. He ended up giving me a ticket for no front plate.

Last year I was driving in my 99 Chevy Blazer. I had air suspension in the front end, and 3" lowering blocks in the back. Since I had a baby, I removed the air suspension and put the stock springs back in the front - which resulted in the front end being 3" higher, giving it the "LA style" look. A cop stopped me and asked if I had air suspension - I explained the situation, and he said it was okay. If I had the air in the front end still, and was driving LA, I could have been cited. But since it was a stock suspension, he couldnt do anything about it. He said it is not illegal to have an air suspension, unless it is driven un-evenly because it creates an un-safe condition.
